The Madagascar Jewel plant, scientifically known as Euphorbia leuconeura, is a striking succulent native to Madagascar, popular as a houseplant for its unique appearance and relatively easy care. It features a thick, angular stem that can reach up to 6 feet indoors, adorned with large, dark green leaves that display prominent white veins, especially when young. As the plant matures, the lower leaves tend to drop, revealing more of its architectural stem. This species is also known for its interesting method of seed dispersal, where mature seed pods explosively eject seeds several feet away, earning it the nickname “shooting plant.”
This Euphorbia prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade, making it adaptable to various indoor environments. It thrives in well-draining soil, typical for succulents, and requires moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. While it appreciates warmth, it should be protected from cold drafts. A notable characteristic is its milky white sap, which is toxic and can cause skin irritation, necessitating careful handling. Small, inconspicuous white flowers may appear on mature plants, followed by the seed pods that contribute to its self-propagation.
